Lock ‘n’ Roll: a new game for your iPhone

December 21st, 2008 § 33 comments

One of the reasons it’s been so long since the last update to FatWatch was because I’ve been working on a game for Canned Bananas. It’s called Lock ‘n’ Roll, and it’s finally available for download from the iTunes App Store.

It’s really a clever game (I can say this because, while I did the programming, the idea was not mine), with just the right combination of luck and skill required. You roll colored dice and then arrange them to get points depending on the probability of the combinations you create. It’s easier to understand if you watch the instructional video on YouTube.

Lock ‘n’ Roll will be free for a limited time, so go download it now before we decide to start making money.

It’s crashing a lot for me. I clicked on Info immediately (before rolling) and it crashed. Re-launched, did the same thing, crashed again. I re-launched, rolled once, then clicked info and it didn’t crash. But then it crashed when I clicked the tips button.

  • Michael Higgins says:

Now it seems better. Perhaps an initialization bug that sorts itself out after a bit…

  • Benjamin says:

Sorry to be cliché, but did you try restarting your phone? All of the actions that triggered a crash involve loading something into memory. Some system level thing could be leaking memory and crowding out the game.

  • Benjamin says:

    Could be gremlins.

  • Michael Higgins says:

The game *is* fun! Hopefully, my phone is just an outlier with the initial symptoms. Anyway, they all seem cleared up now.

  • DN says:

This is a ridiculously addictive game…

  • Jess says:

I love this game. It is fun and a challenge!

  • Shaun says:

I find it fun and kind of addictive. I usually get between 5000-7000 points, but I have scored above 10,000 3x – including almost 40,000. I have had similar issues with crashing if you try to leave the game and look at rules or tips or scores – cycling the iPhone power helps.

i looooooove this game…………my 4 year old and 6 six year is hooked, my bff’s, my hubby, my sister, i got them all hooked……….

    we love lock n roll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Benjamin says:

Thanks for all your nice comments!

@Shaun: Yup, that’s our “beta” version of the leaderboard, not very pretty. The next update to Lock ‘n’ Roll will let you view those numbers from within the game.

We’re also planning to address comments about a restart button, the sounds, and more. We haven’t pushed out an update yet because we’re talking to advertisers; if we work out a deal with them we can keep Lock ‘n’ Roll free.

  • Lucy says:

I LOVE this game & am addicted like everyone else! Will a version for PC Windows users become available? I would love to get this game for my mother to play on her computer!

  • Benjamin says:

Thanks, Lucy! We don’t have plans for it right now, but a Windows version isn’t out of the question.

  • Chris says:

Any tips page for higher numbers? My fiance just beat my top score and I need to crush her back.. She’s at 13,000.

  • Benjamin says:

Wow, I wrote the code but I’ve never got a score that high. Sorry, I’m going to have to refer you to your fiance!

  • Ronnie says:

Played Lock’n'Roll on my daughters iPhone and loved it! I second a windows version would love to be able to keep playing…Great game well done

  • Bigizzy says:

It would be great if you could have “undo” option available.

    That said; great game…super addictive!

  • Benjamin says:

I don’t think we’re going to add an undo: you already get to move the dice around before you lock them, and placing them without knowing which dice come next is an integral part of the game!

  • Bonnie says:

I love this game. It’s ridiculously addicting…and, apparently, I’ve stumbled on some strategies. My average score is floating between 40k and 50k. :D The important bit is to utilize the squares (2×2 blocks, rather than rows and columns) to your advantage…I’ve managed to use a joker and get five clears before, which racks up quite a few points.

This is seriously one of the strongest games I’ve played, and to think that it’s free! You guys did a great job on it. I love the little details especially, like the flawless autosaving and the ability to chose my own music. Thanks! I really ought to buy the pro version soon. ;)

  • Marcelo says:

I’m addicted to it, as well as 4 other friends that I’ve shown L-N-R to!

As the developer, I’d like to put you a question, and just a ‘Yes/No’ answer will be great (even though, if you can give more information the better).

Are the next dice selected randomly? I mean, 100% random?

    Thank you very much

  • Benjamin says:

Yes, Marcelo, the dice color and number are selected randomly. L&R uses the standard C library functions srandomdev() and random() to generate random numbers.

If you’re thinking it does some fancy tricks to give you dice depending on the current state of the board, no it does not. That’s only affected by how lucky (or not) you are.

  • Marcelo says:

    Thanks, Benjamin.

So apparently I don’t have much luck…. every time I see the next dice, I think “this CANNOT be random”…. hahah

  • sheree says:

I was looking on the scoreboard and someone actually got 400k? This is ridiculous especially since I cant even get up to 10k? Someone please tell me what I am doing wrong.

  • Dianne says:

I am so addicted to this game! I hope that you move forward with the windows version. Sheree – I have no idea who these people are scoring in the 400k! I’m with you – I had to quit looking and just try to beat myself!

  • Luisa says:

there’s another windows version request… otherwise my boyfriend is going to kill me one day for steadily using his iphone. ;)

  • Rob says:

Excellent game guys. Yes very addictive and I also wish we could get a windows version. Beats me how some people get more than 20,000 points. Are , but I still enjoy trying to beat my own score or my sons who are amazing at the strategies.

  • Dianne says:

I am sooooo addicted to this game – I get such a thrill when I make a top 20 score for the hour – however, I get discouraged by the bizzilltrillion point scorers! HA. Great wonderful game!

  • JAhroni says:

I LOVE this game. I’ve been addicted for weeks. I too would like an undo button but it should cost 500 points to use it. I’d also like a second chance roll – even though you could get even worse dice the second time. And finally I’d like an abort button. My high score is 18,675 but that’s after weeks of playing this compulsively.

I’d like some hints and tips about how to get those REALLY high scores you see on the reader board. My son is at 25,000+ and he can’t be first.

    Thanks for a great game!

  • Cheri says:

There is a reset button which I am guessing would solve your “abort” request. After playing for months, I finally just beat my high score of 16,000 and something. I am now working on beating my current 18,000 something. WHO are these people that are scoring fifty thousand??? C’mon!

  • ly says:

Love your game. I lost many a hours and sleepless nights trying to beat my own score. Thanks for a great App.

  • steve says:

Is this game available for pc users?
If so, where can I get it?

    tnx, steve
